Archaeological Summer: Iron Age hillfort – oppidum ‘Závist’

Thanks to long-term archaeological excavations, the prehistoric Závist hillfort is the best-known La Tène oppidum in the country. The settlement reached its first heyday during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, becoming one of the most prominent centers in the Bohemian basin. It had extensive contacts with Western Europe, Italy, and Greece. Evidence from this period includes the earliest monumental stone architecture in Bohemia. The oppidum, existing between approximately 150 and 50 BC, covered nearly 200 hectares when including its suburbs. Today, the site features remains of several banks (relics of a wood and earth rampart with a front stone face) and monumental gates.

During the visit, we will explore the most important parts of the fortification, visit the uppermost part, and learn about the current research on this significant archaeological site.
