Archaeological summer: Vyšehrad

Vyšehrad is known to the general public as a place associated with the oldest Czech legends, or as a park for a pleasant respite in the centre of historic Prague. In reality, however, this place hides the remains of an important centre of the Czech state, whose importance in the Middle Ages was comparable to Prague Castle or other major medieval residences of kings in Europe. Among archaeologists, historians and building archaeologists, Vyšehrad is known for the extremely important archaeological discoveries that are continuously uncovered here and which allow us to see the origins of the Czech state in a new light. If you want to know, for example, where the oldest known medieval stone palace in Bohemia was located, what the remains of the oldest known medieval stone bridge in Central Europe look like, or how experts reconstruct the political programme of the first Czech king Vratislav based on findings from the 11th century, you are invited to a guided tour of Vyšehrad in English, led by an expert from the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague. You will also visit places that are usually inaccessible to the public. This tour has been exceptionally included in the programme of the Archaeological Summer on the occasion of the centenary of the archaeological excavations at this site, which began in 1924. The number of visitors on the excursion is 30 people due to the limited capacity of the premises.

Difficulty: moderately difficult (undulating terrain, stairs).

The location is accessible from the Vyšehrad metro station or from the tram stops Albertov, Ostrčilovo náměstí or Výtoň. Parking (paid): the Jedlička Institute (50° 3’38.74″S, 14°25’27.46″E).
